I'm Dr. Colleen, and I'm a Positive Psychology Life & Career Coach. Through individual coaching, group leadership, speaking, teaching, and writing, I help my clients and students re-script their stories so they can see and share their strengths and achievements, and live their most empowered, self-compassionate, and passion-driven lives.
I work with many driven, high-achieving clients who have a lot on their plates, and are working hard to perfectly accommodate everyone and everything around them. Does this sound like you? If so, you know how stressed, drained, unfocused, and self-critical this way of living can make you feel. I also know, because I've lived it too.
For many years I lived with with perfectionism, regret, catastrophizing, anxiety, panic attacks, and low self-esteem. As I share in my TED Talk, it was Positive Psychology tools that helped me RESCRIPT my negative self-story and start living a different one.
What is a self-story? A self-story is comprised of all the things we tell ourselves in our minds, moment by moment, about who we are, why we are or aren’t good enough, what we are or aren’t capable of, and what possibilities the future can hold for us.
If you feel like you've scripted yourself a story that could use some RESCRIPTing for greater balance, joy, passion, self-care, and self-kindness, I'd love to work with you!
Coaching versus Counseling - What is the Difference?
Although my background includes credentials and experience in counseling, I no longer provide counseling services. You might be wondering--how is coaching different from counseling?
Counseling (also referred to as therapy) involves diagnosing psychological dysfunction and helping clients heal deeper level internal conflicts and emotional and mental dysfunctions. Counseling often facilitates this effort by exploring past traumas and utilizing insights gained to improve overall psychological functioning. Counseling is typically provided in person and over a longer period of time.
Coaching, on the other hand, involves helping clients who are feeling stuck in achieving their goals to get unstuck. Coaching is present and future-focused and does not explore one’s past or deeper internal conflicts. Coaching focuses on exploring a client’s goals in each area of their life, as well as identifying the obstacles getting in the way of achieving those goals. Coaches guide their clients in creating roadmaps for achieving what clients desire. They partner with their clients to design and implement actionable steps and benchmarks toward goals, strategies for maintaining motivation and inspiration along the way, and client follow-through and accountability methods. Coaches also help their clients celebrate and savor their successes! While some coaches work in person, coaching is often provided virtually via phone and Skype video (I work with my clients virtually). Coaching is typically more short-term, but can be modified for client needs.
